Passport (NIS)

How to renew a Nigerian passport in 2026.

Nigerian passport renewal in 2026: NIS fees for 5- and 10-year passports, 32 or 64 pages, what to bring, the one capture visit and realistic timelines.

The Nigerian international passport is issued by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). Renewal pairs an online application and payment with a biometric capture appointment at a passport office or, for those abroad, a mission or the NIS MOBILE app. The Enhanced E-Passport is now the standard booklet, and your NIN is the spine of the application.

This guide walks through the renewal route — what to choose, what to bring, and how long renewal realistically takes — so your application is not bounced at the capture stage.

Booklet type: 32 pages for 5 years or 64 pages for 10 years

The NIS offers 32 pages with 5-year validity or 64 pages with 10-year validity. The 64-page 10-year booklet costs more but suits frequent travellers who fill pages with visas and stamps. A 32-page 5-year booklet is fine for occasional travel.

For applications made in Nigeria, the NIS charges ₦100,000 for the 5-year passport and ₦200,000 for the 10-year one, plus bank charges. Abroad, it charges $150 for the 32-page 5-year passport and $230 for the 64-page 10-year one; the portal shows the final amount. The government fees index lists these with their sources.

On Docufy you see the government fee, our service fee and VAT on our fee on the passport renewal page, and again before you pay.

What you need to renew

Renewal assumes the NIS already holds your record from the previous passport. The NIS renewal list asks for:

  • Your current passport (the data page is what they verify against).
  • Your NIN slip — the portal will not proceed without a National Identification Number (NIN), and it takes your details from your NIMC (NIN) record.
  • An NPC birth certificate or a High Court declaration of age.
  • A local government (indigene) certificate.
  • A photo that meets the NIS rules: a recent colour photo on a white or off-white background, without glasses, at least 600 x 800 pixels.
  • Proof of payment from the online application.

Step-by-step

The application runs the same way whether you apply on the NIS portal (passport.immigration.gov.ng) yourself or use a filing service like Docufy, where a vetted partner firm handles the paperwork:

1. Apply and pay online

The NIS application captures your details, the booklet type, and the office where you will do capture. Payment is through the NIS passport portal, not in cash at passport offices. On Docufy you fill a short form on your phone and upload your passport data page and a digital passport photograph.

2. Book the capture appointment

You select a passport office and an appointment slot; on Docufy the partner firm books it for you. In Nigeria, capture is mandatory and in person — facial photo, fingerprints, and signature.

Nigerians living abroad can renew through the NIS MOBILE app instead. It is not for first-time applicants and minors, and it adds a $100 service fee.

3. Attend capture

Bring the document checklist above. The officer verifies your data against the old passport and your NIN, then captures biometrics.

4. Collect the booklet

The NIS’s own target for a renewal is 21 days after successful enrolment, and office workload affects it. You can follow the application at track.immigration.gov.ng.

Realistic timelines

The NIS sets the production time, and it varies by office and demand season. The Docufy page for this filing shows the target time in business days before you start. If you have travel planned, apply early and leave a margin. Do not book non-refundable flights against an in-progress passport.

Fix your NIN before you apply, not after

A common cause of renewal rejection is a name or date-of-birth mismatch between the passport application and the NIN record. The NIS reads your NIN as the source of truth. If your NIN has a typo or your name changed after marriage, correct the NIN first — see the guide on NIN modification and the NIMC hub — then apply for the passport.

Questions

Frequently asked.

How much does it cost to renew a Nigerian passport in 2026?

For applications made in Nigeria, the NIS charges ₦100,000 for a 5-year passport and ₦200,000 for a 10-year one, plus bank charges. On Docufy you pay one all-in price, VAT included, shown on the passport renewal page and again before you pay.

How long does passport renewal take?

The NIS sets the pace, and it varies by office and season. The Docufy page for this filing shows the target time before you start. If you have travel planned, apply early, and never book non-refundable flights against an in-progress passport.

Do I need my NIN to renew my passport?

Yes. The NIS application is built around your NIN, and a mismatch between the NIN record and the application is a common cause of rejection. Correct any NIN error before you apply.

Can I renew before my passport expires?

Yes, whether it has expired or is still valid. The remaining validity is generally not added to the new booklet, but renewing early avoids being caught without a valid passport.

Can I avoid going to the passport office?

Not in Nigeria. A renewal in Nigeria needs one visit to a passport office for your biometric capture. On Docufy you fill the form, upload your papers and pay on your phone, and the partner firm books the appointment, so the capture is the only step that needs you. Nigerians living abroad can use the NIS MOBILE app instead.
