What does vehicle licence renewal cost in Nigeria?

Vehicle licence renewal cost in Nigeria: the four charges in a vehicle papers renewal, why each state's bill differs, and what you pay on Docufy.

The phrase "vehicle papers" hides four separate costs: the vehicle licence (your registration with the state), roadworthiness, third-party insurance, and a few small certificate and stamp-duty charges. People usually mean the whole set when they ask what renewal costs. This guide breaks it down so you know what each line is for.

Costs vary by state and vehicle class. A private saloon in Lagos and the same car in Kano will not pay exactly the same vehicle licence fee, because each state sets its own. Docufy’s price for a vehicle licence renewal is on the vehicle licence renewal page, and you see it again before you pay.

The four costs inside a "vehicle papers" renewal

When you renew vehicle papers, you are really paying for these, and they go to different bodies:

  • Vehicle licence — a state revenue, set by vehicle class and engine capacity. In Lagos a car pays from ₦1,250 (engine below 1.6 litres) to ₦3,125 (above 3.0 litres).
  • Roadworthiness certificate — a yearly fee for a private vehicle, paid to the state’s vehicle inspection office. In Lagos it depends on the vehicle's engine capacity.
  • Third-party motor insurance — mandatory, from a NAICOM-licensed insurer. NAICOM sets the premium for a private car at ₦15,000.
  • Stamp duty and certificate printing — small fixed charges.

A typical 2026 total

For a private saloon car, add the four lines together for a full year of papers. In Lagos, for example, a car with a 1.6 to 2.0 litre engine pays ₦1,875 for the vehicle licence and ₦15,000 for third-party insurance, plus roadworthiness and small charges. A bigger engine, an SUV or a commercial vehicle pushes the vehicle licence and insurance lines higher. A commercial vehicle also needs a hackney permit, which a private car does not.

Those are the charges that go to the state, the inspection office and your insurer. Touts at licensing offices charge extra on top to get you through faster, and the extra is rarely itemised. That is the cost an online filing with an itemised price avoids.

Why the bill differs between states

The vehicle licence is a state revenue, so Lagos, the FCT, Rivers, Kano and Oyo each set their own band. Roadworthiness and insurance vary less from state to state. Check your own state’s current rates before you budget.

What you actually pay on Docufy

Docufy’s filing renews the vehicle licence only. The price is one all-in figure that covers the government fee, our service fee and VAT, and it is fixed once you submit. Insurance and roadworthiness are not part of it: you upload your current certificates with the form, and a vetted partner firm submits the renewal. Your renewed papers land in your vault.

See the live price and target time on the vehicle licence renewal page. For the driver’s licence and vehicle licence together, see the FRSC hub.

Renewing while expired

You can renew after expiry, though some states add a late charge, and Lagos allows no grace period after papers expire. The bigger risk is the gap: an expired vehicle licence or lapsed insurance is an offence at a checkpoint, and lapsed insurance means you carry the liability yourself if there is an accident. Renew before the expiry date to stay covered.

Questions

Frequently asked.

How much does it cost to renew vehicle papers in Lagos in 2026?

In Lagos, a private car pays ₦1,250 to ₦3,125 for the vehicle licence, depending on engine size, plus ₦15,000 for third-party insurance, a roadworthiness fee and small stamp duty charges. SUVs, larger engines and commercial vehicles cost more, and commercial vehicles add a hackney permit. Docufy’s vehicle licence price is on the vehicle licence renewal page.

Is the vehicle licence the same as third-party insurance?

No. The vehicle licence is your registration with the state. Third-party insurance is a separate annual policy from a NAICOM-licensed insurer. Both are mandatory and both are checked on the road.

Why does the cost differ between states?

The vehicle licence is a state revenue, so each state sets its own band by vehicle class. Roadworthiness and insurance vary less from state to state.

Do I pay extra to renew after it expires?

It depends on the state: some add a late charge, some do not. Either way, driving with expired papers or lapsed insurance is an offence, so renew before the expiry date.

Can I renew vehicle papers online without going to an office?

Yes for the vehicle licence, as long as your insurance and roadworthiness certificates are current. On Docufy you upload them with the form, there is no office visit, and your renewed papers land in your vault. Insurance comes from an insurer, and roadworthiness may need a physical inspection.
