Vehicle & licence (FRSC)

FRSC vehicle licence renewal in 2026.

FRSC vehicle licence renewal: what each vehicle paper is for, why costs differ by state, what you need and how to renew your vehicle licence online.

Every Nigerian vehicle needs four current papers: the vehicle licence, a roadworthiness certificate, a hackney permit (for commercial use), and third-party insurance. The vehicle licence is a state revenue, collected through your state’s licensing authority. Roadworthiness comes from a vehicle inspection office. Insurance comes from a NAICOM-licensed insurer. The FRSC and the police check them on the road.

This guide covers what each paper is for, what renewal typically costs in 2026, what you need, and how to renew your vehicle licence online without dealing with touts.

What papers your vehicle actually needs

These four are the legal minimum on the road. Police and FRSC checkpoints can ask for any of them.

  • Vehicle licence (sometimes called "registration" or "papers") — paid to the state.
  • Roadworthiness certificate — from a vehicle inspection office, renewed yearly for private vehicles.
  • Hackney permit — only required for commercial vehicles (taxi, bus, ride-hailing).
  • Third-party motor insurance — annual and mandatory, bought from an insurer.

The 2026 cost breakdown

Costs vary by state, vehicle class and engine size, and each state sets its own vehicle licence band. The Lagos figures below come from the state’s published schedule; check your own state’s current rates, or confirm at a licensing station, before you budget.

  • Vehicle licence: set by your state, by vehicle class and engine size. In Lagos a car pays from ₦1,250 (engine below 1.6 litres) to ₦3,125 (above 3.0 litres).
  • Roadworthiness: a yearly fee set by your state’s vehicle inspection office. In Lagos the fee depends on the vehicle's engine capacity, and the car must first pass a computerised inspection at a LACVIS centre.
  • Third-party insurance: NAICOM sets the premium for a private car at ₦15,000. You can check a policy on askniid.org.
  • Hackney permit (commercial only): set by the state. In Lagos a taxi pays ₦3,525.
  • Stamp duty and certificate charges: small fixed amounts.

What to bring

For a vehicle licence renewal on Docufy, you upload these from your phone:

  • Proof of ownership (POO).
  • A current insurance certificate (third-party at minimum).
  • A current roadworthiness certificate.
  • Your last vehicle licence receipt, if you have it.

For a first-time registration

New cars and imported vehicles need more documents — bill of lading or dealer invoice, customs papers for imports, proof of ownership, and photographs of the vehicle. Docufy’s filing covers renewals only, so a first registration goes through your state’s licensing office.

How long the renewal takes

In person at a licensing office, a renewal can take a half-day on a slow day and a full day on a busy one. On Docufy there is no office visit, as long as you have your current insurance and roadworthiness certificates to upload. A vetted partner firm submits the renewal, the vehicle licence renewal page shows the target time in business days before you start, and your renewed papers land in your vault.

Avoiding the tout layer

Licensing offices in major cities have touts who charge extra to get you through faster, and the extra is rarely itemised. There are two safer ways to renew:

  • Your state’s own online licensing portal, where one exists. When it works, it works; it can be slow at peak times.
  • A filing service like Docufy. A vetted partner firm submits the renewal, and you see the full price before you pay, with the government fee, our service fee and VAT on our fee as separate lines.

Renewal reminders

Vehicle licence, insurance, roadworthiness and hackney permits are all yearly. A driver’s licence runs 3 or 5 years. Put the dates in your calendar, or you may find out at a checkpoint that something has lapsed. If you renew your vehicle licence through Docufy, we email you about two weeks before it comes round again a year later.

Questions

Frequently asked.

How much does it cost to renew vehicle papers in Lagos in 2026?

In Lagos, the vehicle licence costs ₦1,250 to ₦3,125 depending on engine size, and third-party insurance for a private car is ₦15,000. Roadworthiness is priced by engine capacity after a computerised inspection, small stamp duty charges apply, and a commercial vehicle adds a hackney permit. On Docufy, the vehicle licence price is shown before you pay.

Do I need to bring my car for inspection during renewal?

Not for the vehicle licence itself. Docufy’s renewal needs no visit: you upload your current roadworthiness and insurance certificates. If your roadworthiness has expired, renew it at a vehicle inspection office first.

Can I renew while my licence is already expired?

Yes, but you risk being stopped at a checkpoint while it is expired, and some states add a late charge. Lagos allows no grace period after papers expire. Renew before the expiry date to stay covered.

What is the difference between vehicle licence and road worthiness?

The vehicle licence shows the vehicle is registered with the state and the fees are paid. Roadworthiness shows the vehicle has passed a basic mechanical inspection. Different fees, different offices, both required.

Can I renew online without going to an FRSC office?

Yes for the vehicle licence, as long as your insurance and roadworthiness certificates are current: you upload them with the form and there is no office visit. Insurance is bought from an insurer, and roadworthiness may need a physical inspection.
