Paying NIS twice by mistake, or paying and then never booking an appointment, are two genuine reasons for a refund. Almost everything else isn't, however unfair that might feel at the time.

Here's the policy in full, and the deadline that catches people out.

When NIS will actually refund you

NIS refunds a payment only for a double payment or where no appointment has been booked. Those are the only two situations the policy covers.

A double payment is straightforward. If you paid twice for the same application by accident, that's refundable.

The second case covers paying but never getting as far as booking a slot. Once a slot is booked, this reason no longer applies, even if you later change your mind about going ahead.

When it won't

Outside those two cases, NIS's policy is strict. It doesn't cover an error you spot after paying, a decision to switch between the 32-page and 64-page booklet, a duplicate application, or an application that's been queried or rejected.

The no-appointment refund also doesn't apply if you used the contactless route. Check every detail before you pay, since "I made a mistake" isn't itself a refundable reason.

The deadline to ask

You have 21 days from the payment date to request a refund. Miss that window, and even a genuinely double payment may no longer qualify.

Don't wait to see if the problem resolves itself. Submit your request as soon as you notice the issue, with your application ID, payment reference and proof of debit ready.

How long a refund takes

Once NIS approves a refund, expect about six weeks. Treat that as NIS's own estimate, not a fixed promise you can set your calendar by.

That's a real wait, so budget for it rather than assuming the money will be back before your next bill is due. Following up before that window closes rarely speeds things up.

How to submit the request

Gather your application ID, payment reference and proof of debit before you start. NIS's refund process asks for all three, and a request missing one of them is likely to be delayed further.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming any payment mistake qualifies for a refund.
  • Missing the request deadline while waiting to see what happens.
  • Submitting a request without the application ID or payment reference.

Questions people ask

Can I get a refund if I made a mistake on my application after paying?

No. NIS's policy doesn't cover errors found after payment. Check every detail carefully before you pay, not after.

Can I get a refund if I want to switch booklet type?

No. Switching between the 32-page and 64-page booklet isn't a refundable reason under NIS's policy.

What if my application was queried or rejected?

NIS's refund policy doesn't cover a queried or rejected application either. Resolving the query is usually the better route.

Does the no-appointment refund apply to the contactless route?

No. NIS's policy excludes contactless applications from the no-appointment refund reason.
