NIMC has changed how you deal with it several times since late 2024. The changes cover where corrections are made, what they cost, how the portal recognises you and how you prove who you are.
This is the dated list, with what each change means for you today. It is part of our NIN and NIMC guides.
The timeline
| When | What changed | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| 2 Oct 2024 | Enrolment centres stopped modifications | Data changes go through the self-service portal |
| 2 May 2025 | NIMC's first price review in a decade took effect | Corrections cost more |
| July 2025 | NIMC confirmed in a letter that a date of birth fix is free when NIMC made the error | You may not pay for a date of birth error NIMC made |
| August 2025 | NIMC's spokesperson announced the device rule | Your portal account is tied to one device and browser |
| 30 Oct 2025 | NINAuth formally launched | It is NIMC's identity app, and slip downloads in it are free |
| 1 Jan 2026 | The Tax ID went live | It is linked to your NIN, so your NIN details matter more |
Changes moved to the portal
Since 2 Oct 2024, NIMC directs all data changes to its self-service portal at selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng. A new photo is the one change that still needs a visit.
Read do you need to visit NIMC if you are unsure which route your change takes. Registering on the portal shows how to set up an account.
Fees rose, and the device rule followed
NIMC called the fee review its first in a decade. The date of birth fee rose about 75%, to ₦28,574. Other fields now cost ₦2,000. The post on what changed in the fee schedule has the old and new figures side by side.
In August 2025, NIMC's spokesperson said your account is tied to the same device and browser used to create the account. NIMC also warned that clearing the browser cache can lock it. See locked out of the portal for the way back.
NINAuth and the Tax ID
NIMC formally launched NINAuth on 30 Oct 2025. Slip downloads inside the app are free. At the launch, the President said all ministries, departments and agencies would be required to adopt it for staff and data verification. See what NINAuth is.
The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), formerly FIRS, and the Joint Revenue Board issue the Tax ID. For an individual it is linked to your NIN. The lookup at taxid.nrs.gov.ng asks for your NIN, first name, last name and date of birth as held by NIMC.
That means a wrong NIN record can now block something outside NIMC. If your lookup fails, read Tax ID lookup not matching your NIN.
What did not change
- Standard enrolment is still free.
- NIMC still allows a date of birth change only once.
- NIMC still publishes its fees at nimc.gov.ng/fees.
What to do this month
- Download your slip free in NINAuth and read every field. If something is wrong, use wrong details on your NIN slip.
- Note which device and browser your portal account uses, and keep using them.
- Run the Tax ID lookup with the details on your slip.
- Bookmark the fees page, and check any fee quoted in an older guide against it.
Common mistakes
- Following a guide that sends you to a centre for a name change. Centres stopped modifications on 2 Oct 2024.
- Quoting the old date of birth fee. It was ₦16,340 before 2 May 2025.
- Assuming NINAuth replaced the portal. That is not confirmed, and NIMC directs data changes to the portal.
- Clearing your browser cache on the portal phone. The device rule can lock the account.
If your NIN details need a fix, you can start a NIN modification with Docufy. It collects your details in the right format, a vetted partner firm files it, and NIMC decides it. A NIN modification needs no office visit unless you change your photo.
